The Janusz Kurtyka Foundation is organizing a Conference entitled “Memorial Candles in Our Hands: The Advantages Polish Scholarship and Museum Studies on the Commemoration of Holocaust Sites Have Brought for Polish – Jewish Relations”.
The Conference entails a special review of the Polish tributes to Holocaust victims in Polish territories, as regards memorial sites and their place in museum studies and general scholarship; a comparison of the Polish work with the beginnings and scope of what has been done in other countries; and an examination of the effects commemoration has had on the awareness of Polish and Jewish people, and hence also on current and future Polish–Jewish relations, showing the beneficial outcomes of commemoration.
The Conference will consist of three parts: papers, an experts’ discussion, and questions from the floor. Each of our speakers will deliver a 20-minute paper on one of the following subjects: museum studies, what has been done in scholarship, or awareness research.
- Professor Sebastian Piątkowski (Institute of National Remembrance),
- Aleksandra Namysło (Institute of National Remembrance),
- Piotr Setkiewicz (Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum).
Dr. Marcin Owsiński (Stutthof Museum) will be the moderator.
Conference Partners: University of St. Thomas (Houston), Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Houston.
The Conference will be held on August 27, 2021, between the hours of 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. (17.30 – 19.30 Central European Summer Time).
