Conference Recovering Forgotten History. The Image of East-Central Europe in English-Language Academic Textbooks and Monographs

On 29 May 2023, the 21st edition of the conference Recovering Forgotten History. The Image of East-Central Europe in English-Language Academic Textbooks and Monographs began in Krakow, the Polish History Museum its main organiser.

‘A meeting of researchers of various historiographic traditions and schools of thought is of great value, thanks to which our knowledge of the history of Central Europe is becoming fuller,’ said Prof. Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski, Chief Historian at the Polish History Museum, welcoming the participants and opening the conference.

The objective of the event originally launched in 2006 is improving the knowledge of readers of English-language historical literature about the history of Poland and East-Central European, as well as creating opportunities for avoiding simplifications and stereotypes.

A brainchild of Prof. Andrzej Sulima Kamiński of Georgetown University, the conference provides a discussion platform for Western historians and publishers on the one hand, and members of Polish and Central European researcher community on the other.

In the course of panel discussions, editors of international scientific publications and authors of works soon to be published by them have an opportunity to become familiar with major findings of Polish and Central European historiography.

During this year’s conference, the following week is bound to be filled with discussions about publications selected on the basis of notifications of the publishing houses cooperating with the programme.

This year’s is already the 21th edition of the event. Over the years, several dozen authors and nearly 100 experts from Poland and Central European countries have taken part in it. In total, more than 100 books were subject to critical analysis in the period 2006–2022.

The publishers cooperating with the programme include: Oxford University Press, Toronto University Press, Harvard University Press, Pittsburgh University Press and McGill-Queen’s University Press.
