The Power of the Story: From an Old Chronicle to a Modern Museum – a temporary exhibition at the Polish History Museum

15/06/2024 – 15/09/2024

A temporary exhibition titled The Power of the Story: From and Old Chronicle to a Modern Museum has opened at the Polish History Museum. It focuses on various ways of narrating Polish history and is divided into its successive stages: from the Middle Ages until modern times. The exhibition makes the visitor familiar with the ways of building the historical narrative, as well as showcases the tools used for creating it, diverse methods of narrating history, as well as the impact they have had on those on the receiving end.

The exhibition shows how stories concerning Poland’s history were and are built and what the origin of their power to create collective imagination is, even more so as this story – the forming of which began with medieval chronicles – has not ended at all. Historians rarely reach wide audiences directly and usually their thoughts and interpretations become known thanks to various artistic and social outputs. The exhibition features the media used over the centuries by artists, historians, writers and museologists when building narratives about the past. Six modules are used to present how the Poles have been developing a narrative about their country’s history and national community, how legends have been created, myths emerged and symbols shaped without which we would not be who we are.

The journey begins at the time of the Piasts and Jagiellons, where chroniclers’ main task was to reinforce the authority of the ruling dynasty. Another important aspect is a presentation of historical scenes and Polish victories, as well as the role they have played in building community identity. The final section of the exhibition is devoted to museums. It starts with a presentation of the oldest museum initiatives from the late 1700s, primarily the Temple of the Sibyl established by Izabela Czartoryska, the first museum collecting Polish keepsakes related to history.

The exhibition also showcases the evolution of the notion of a national museum, from its first implementation in Krakow in the 19th century, through the initiative of setting up one in Warsaw, to the reconstruction of the Royal Castle there after the Second World War.

The exhibition The Power of the Story: From and Old Chronicle to a Modern Museum can be viewed at the Polish History Museum already as of 15 June 2024.
