In 2025, Poland celebrates the 1,000th anniversary of the coronation of Boleslaw Chrobry, the first king of Poland. To mark the occasion, the Polish History Museum has announced a nationwide plebiscite: the Ranking of the Kings of the Millennium. Voting will last until July 6.
Internet users can choose from 28 kings – 26 monarchs and two monarchesses – who ruled Poland from 1025 to the end of the 18th century. Among them are representatives of the Piast, Jagiellon and Vasa dynasties.
The voting will result in two independent rankings. The first will be an audience ranking based on votes cast online at ranking.muzhp.pl and in a special ballot box at the MHP headquarters. The second will be a ranking by historians, who will assess the kings in four categories: domestic policy, foreign policy, impact on civil liberties, and ability to respond to the challenges of the era.
The results of the vote will be announced on July 6, 2025, during the event “Feast at Chrobry’s,” to be held at Warsaw’s Citadel.
The main goal of the project is to provide an opportunity to recall the profiles of past kings, but also a pretext for reflecting on the modern understanding of leadership, responsibility and good governance.
